THE HISTORY OF BENCHMADE

The Benchmade Knife Company started operations in Clackamas, Oregon in 1990 (originally it was founded in California in 1988). The first knives primarily were Bali-Song® knives, and used a combination of outside suppliers and in-house processing to make finished products. And as most companies experience when starting out, money was scarce but plans were big which meant using second hand equipment and limited resources.

Shortly though, a strong desire and an undying passion to make it right and “make it Benchmade“, resulted in significant growth. As the number of products grew, so did the in-house capabilities. Benchmade began to purchase new equipment and technologies which included the first of several lasers. This made Benchmade the first knife manufacturer to have this kind of equipment in-house. “Out of the box” thinking by Benchmades talented team led to several more firsts in knife manufacturing over the course of the next several years.

This was just the beginning of Benchmade breaking new ground in knife manufacturing by using non-traditional materials and modern manufacturing techniques. This has resulted in not only making knives better but, inevitably making better knives.

The Designer Series was introduced in 1991 with several custom designs being made. By accessing the valuable resource of the custom knife makers' knowledge and combining it with Benchmades manufacturing expertise, they were able to offer more contemporary knife designs and innovations to knife users.

Successive years of tremendous growth led to the next step in 1996 when Benchmade moved into its own 35,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility. This facility is a contemporary styled building, complete with all of the modern machines and amenities necessary to produce world class cutlery for their loyal and ever growing following of knife users.

As Benchmade moves into the 21st century, they are well positioned to take advantage of the ever increasing improvements in machines and manufacturing techniques which will result in even more exciting opportunities for producing world-class products. The people at Benchmade have a simple philosophy- "Make it cool, make it solid, make it happen and definitely make it Benchmade." This philosophy has served them well and will continue to do so into the future.
